CONNOR'S SLEEPING PATTERN

I do not have a lot of details about Connor's sleeping habits (and health conditions ect.), but one thing that could nicely explain Connor’s sleeping pattern is called the “Delayed sleep-phase disorder”.  It is much more common then we may think and, sadly, even more under-diagnosed.

To make it simple, it is a dysregulation of the circadian rhythm of one person, compared to the general population. Which means the timing of sleep and the period of alertness are different form the other people.

Normally, these folks need to go to bed late to fall asleep (usually from 2 to 4 hours later then the general population) and would naturally sleep late in the morning to compensate. But because of the reality of having to get up to work in the morning, they develop insomnia as they cannot respect their particular sleeping pattern.

Consequences? Because they have to wake up early in the morning, when they come home after work (AND if they have the possibility, meaning living alone or/and no kids or/and a comprehensive spouse…) they usually tend to go straight to bed to get the extra hours of sleep they need. Then they wake up sometime in the evening and manage to fall asleep only very late in the night.

At the end of the day, they still get all the sleep hours they need but in two parts, usually 4-5 hours early in the morning and 4-5 hours late in the day. Trying to follow the regular sleep pattern of the general population is useless, as it does not respect their particular rhythm.

Some treatments are available but they tend to fail on the long run. The best thing is to go along with one’s sleeping pattern by adjusting the rest periods with one’s working schedule.

To summarize all this, I wouldn’t be to concern with Connor’s sleeping pattern. The only real problem is to integrate it in a normal social life. But already doing a Zero Carb diet, I am sure Connor has learn to deal with “social pressure to be in the norms”…!!!

Connor's Zero Carb Diet Journey Day 116

Today I did it again, I fell asleep after getting home from work. I did arrive home a little later than usual today. First I got a haircut near where I live. That took a little while to do. Then immediately after my haircut I went shopping for some meat to grill for tomorrow. The place where I get my haircut is next to an HEB store. So I went over there and shopped for some meat. I ended up buying 2 packages of leg quarters that are pre-seasoned with an Adobo mix, 2 packages of boneless beef ribs and 2 packages of burgers. I am thinking of cooking at least 1 package of each tomorrow on the outdoor grill. Now back to what I was writing about concerning falling asleep shortly after I got home today. I forgot to mention that I went to get gas before heading back to my side of town for my haircut. My commute to work takes about an hour in the evening. It is much faster in the morning. While at the gas station I felt a little hungry. So I bought a bag of pork cracklings. They were really good and loaded with fat. I had almost finished the single serving bag just before I got to the hair cutting place. Then of course I went shopping, then home. After I arrived at home I put up my meat, then changed cloths to something more comfortable. I laid down and rested a bit and before I knew it I was asleep. Normally I would have eaten something, but the cracklings were really filling. This was about 6 PM. I then woke up around 9:30 PM. I was not really hungry, but I decided to eat my last burger. I ended up putting a little mayo on top for good measure. No movement on the scale today. I want to give a special shout out to Denis for responding so quickly to look into my sleep question. Thanks for stopping by to share my zero carb journey with me and all your support.

Connor's Zero Carb Diet Journey Day 115

I had a really good day today. I am feeling great health wise. I am trying to be careful about the foods I eat. I still think about that Thai fish incident and don't want to repeat that anytime soon. I need to eat when I am hungry and not wait too long. I do a morning fast during the workweek for about 5- 6 hours. Weekends are hit and miss according to my schedule if any. I have been going through a trend now and then of taking a nap after work. I have mentioned this several times in the past. I don't know why this is happening. Sometimes like today I get home from work, eat then lay down to rest and end up falling asleep. Then I get up and stay up really late like now. That is why this posting is so late. You can see the time-stamp at the bottom of the post.  I guess all in all I get enough rest when I combine my nap and then the few hours I get before I get up for work. I just rather get all the rest at one time. I don't know if I should be making a big deal about this at all. Maybe Denis can give some input on this concern if he has time. I got a good deal on 2 lb packages of large shrimp at the store and decided to eat some for my second meal of the day. I just boiled the shrimp in water and used mayo with a little onion and garlic powder mixed in as a dipping sauce. It was really good and a break from the regular foods I eat. I noticed lately I have been wanting something different for my second meal of the day. No movement on the scale today. I want to give out a special shout out to Monica Smith for her comment of support. Thanks for stopping by to share my zero carb journey with me and for your support.

Connor's Zero Carb Diet Journey Day 114

Today was a pretty good day. I feel totally recovered from my Thai fish indecent. I had to do a little shopping after work today. I decided to eat something other than burgers again for my second meal of the day. I was not feeling like eating eggs either. So while at the store I looked at the frozen chicken wings. The fully cooked ones that have flavors already infused had several carbs listed. Each serving had between 4-6 carbs. I believe the carb count was for about six wing segments. I may not sound like a lot, but I rather not play with fire. Instead I bought a bag of frozen plain raw chicken wing segments. I got home and turned on the oven to 400 degrees and put 13 wing segments on a cookie sheet that was lined with parchment paper. I have found that the parchment paper helps from the wings sticking and it makes for easy clean up. I cooked the wings segments in the oven for 45 minuets. I forgot to mention that I sprinkled some salt and pepper on the wing segments. I wanted to add some flavor like the wing restaurant, so I decided to go with a garlic butter sauce. It was really easy. I just melted a half stick of butter and crushed a large clove of garlic into it. i let it sit awhile until the chicken wing segments where cooked. Then I tossed the wings in the butter garlic sauce. It was really good and filling. No movement on the scale today. I am feeling really great at this point on zero carb. It is just becoming a routine for me. I still take it day by day. Thanks for stopping by to share my zero carb journey with me.

Connor's Zero Carb Diet Journey Days 112 & 113

I took yesterday off and met a friend for lunch. We went to a Thailand restaurant. I chose a spicy steamed whole fish. I thought it would real safe. I asked about the spices and nothing had sugar in it. This was actually the start of a day of agony for me. It was about 1:00 PM. A lot later than I usually eat my first meal of the day. My stomach was really empty and I was hungry when we made it to the restaurant. The fish was really, really spicy hot. It had dried red peppers all over it and some crush red pepper powder sprinkled on it. Normally I can eat hot spicy food without much problems. I think being really hungry and my stomach being empty was a recipe for disaster. After we ate we were going to go to do some shopping at the mall, but then I felt my stomach ache and I told my lunch mate that I needed to go home. Just minuets after I arrived home it started. I had the runs really bad. My stomach started to hurt bad and I was in the bathroom for most of the rest of the day. I was really miserable. Needles to say I did not eat anything else for the day. Later that day I went to be and feel asleep. Today when I got up I felt much better and went to work. I still had a little ache in my gut, but for the most part I was OK. I grilled some burgers on the outdoor grill today after work. I used some lump wood coal and they came out great. I made 2 batches. The first batch was a little overcook because the grill was too hot. I should have waited a little longer. No movement on the scale today. I want to give a special shout out to Heidi and Emily for their comments of support. Thanks everyone for stopping by and sharing my zero carb journey with me.
